Start with what the building sits on. A gravel pad drains naturally.

Beyond that, make sure the ground around the building slopes gently away on all sides. Even a slight grade pushes water in the right direction. If you're in a naturally wet area, extending the gravel pad a bit wider or adding a simple drainage channel can make a big difference.
