What kind of site prep do I need before my shed arrives?

The Short Answer

At minimum, you want a level, clear spot with decent drainage. A gravel pad is the best option for most buildings.

Full answer below ↓

If you're going with gravel, lay down landscape fabric first, then 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone. Make the pad about a foot wider than the building on each side for drainage and airflow. For a larger garage or workshop, a poured concrete slab is worth considering.

The important thing: don't set it on bare dirt. Moisture, frost heave, and weeds will cause problems over time. A little prep now saves a lot of hassle later.
