Permits & Site Prep in the Inkster Area

We have delivered and built for plenty of customers across the Inkster area. Here is what we generally see for permits and site prep, just to point you in the right direction.

Permit needed over 200 sq ft

Inkster's zoning permit application includes a specific checkbox for storage sheds under 200 sq ft and states this application is not for new construction of houses and garages. Under-200-sq-ft storage sheds use the zoning permit path; larger sheds/garages should be confirmed through the Building Department/building permit process.

Inkster permit guidelines

The permit details above come from the City of Inkster. Some Inkster mailing addresses actually fall under a neighboring township or village with its own rules, so confirm with the office that covers your exact property.

What the City of Inkster requires

Setbacks
Accessory buildings may not be erected in any required yard except a rear yard. Detached accessory buildings must be at least 10 ft from any main building, at least 3 ft from any side or rear lot line, and at least 1 ft from the rear lot line where the rear lot line is coterminous with an alley right-of-way. Accessory buildings may not be located within a dedicated easement/right-of-way.
Height & coverage
In R-1A, R-1B, R-1C, RM, RM-1, O-1 and B-1 districts, accessory buildings may not exceed 1 story or 14 ft in height and may not occupy more than 25% of a required rear yard plus 40% of any non-required rear yard; in no case may the accessory building exceed the ground-floor area of the main building. Accessory buildings over 444 sq ft and/or over 1 story or 14 ft in any residence or business district, if intended for other than storage of private motor vehicles, require Zoning Board of Appeals approval.

Foundations & site prep

We set most buildings on a level gravel pad, which is all the majority of sheds and garages need. Larger or permanent structures can call for a concrete slab or a rat wall, a perimeter footing that keeps rodents out and meets code for a permanent foundation. We will walk through what your size and site actually need.

This is just information we are aware of, not the final word. Requirements can be more or less depending on your exact parcel and municipality, so we always advise checking directly with your local office before you build. We are glad to help you figure it out.
