Outdoor Buildings Around Westland
We've delivered sheds, garages, barns, cabins, and more throughout Westland and across Wayne County over the years, from the established suburban subdivisions of Westland near the Holliday Forest preserve and the Tonquish Creek corridor.
Rouge tributary valleys, wooded preserves, and low parkland can leave wet soils or drainage issues on nearby lots, and older yards may have tight access. We will plan a level base and a clear path.
Older Westland subdivisions are often low on HOA rules, while condos and newer communities may have them, so check yours before you order.

Permits & Site Prep in the Westland Area
We have delivered and built for plenty of customers across the Westland area. Here is what we generally see for permits and site prep, just to point you in the right direction.
Permit needed over 200 sq ft
Westland lists garages and new buildings as residential work usually requiring a permit and provides a Residential Zoning Permit Application for sheds, fences, and flatwork. The planning FAQ specifically addresses detached garages, pole barns, and sheds, including accessory-building standards for buildings larger than 200 sq ft.
City of Westland Building Division · 734-467-3210
The permit details above come from the City of Westland. Some Westland mailing addresses actually fall under a neighboring township or village with its own rules, so confirm with the office that covers your exact property.
What the City of Westland requires
- Setbacks
- Residential accessory buildings may not be erected in any required yard except a rear yard and may not be nearer than 2 ft to any adjoining lot line. A detached accessory building must have its front building line at least 10 ft to the rear of the main building line; detached private garages may not have the front building line closer to the front lot line than the rear building line of the main building. Corner lots have an additional projection limit tied to the adjacent rear lot.
- Height & coverage
- Residential accessory buildings larger than 200 sq ft may occupy not more than 40% of a required rear yard and/or 25% of any nonrequired rear yard; total square footage of all accessory buildings may not exceed the ground-floor area of the main building. Detached accessory structures may not exceed 14 ft in height.
Foundations & site prep
We set most buildings on a level gravel pad, which is all the majority of sheds and garages need. Larger or permanent structures can call for a concrete slab or a rat wall, a perimeter footing that keeps rodents out and meets code for a permanent foundation. We will walk through what your size and site actually need.
This is just information we are aware of, not the final word. Requirements can be more or less depending on your exact parcel and municipality, so we always advise checking directly with your local office before you build. We are glad to help you figure it out.
